TMJ/ TMD

Ready to get some TMJ relief? If you are suffering from headaches, migraines, or jaw pain, there are safe and lasting solutions right here at Butler Smiles Dental Care.

More people suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) than you may realize. Many patients come to us with chronic facial pain, buzzing ears, and recurring headaches. Some visit various doctors without any success.

These temporomandibular joints (TMJ) lie on either side of the head. They connect the lower mandible to the rest of the skull, and when they do not function properly, they can cause severe pain.

At Butler Smiles Dental Care, we understand the cause of your pain and how we can help in resolving it. Our compassionate team is on your side and will work hard to find the right treatment for you. Learn more about TMJ pain or call for a consultation.

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

When a person has TMJ disorder, it can become challenging to chew normally, cause clicking and popping noises, and limit jaw movement. TMJ disorder may stem from a variety or a combination of causes, including:

  • Facial injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Tooth grinding or clenching
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Arthritis
  • Stress

While there are many underlying causes of TMJ pain, the treatments are usually the same regardless of the cause. You should see a doctor if you have had a traumatic injury to ensure proper care, but even after a face or neck injury heals, you may still have lasting jaw pain.

Our dentists would be happy to work with you and help you banish TMJ pain for good. We will gather information about your unique bone structure and the details of your disorder. We are well-versed in handling TMJ and are confident that we can get you out of pain permanently.

Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

While occasional jaw pain might not be cause for concern, you’ll want to watch out for persistent pain or other concerning symptoms. The most common indicators of a TMJ problem include:

  • Pain or tenderness in your jaw
  • Pain in or around your ear
  • Troubles with chewing
  • Pain while chewing
  • Consistent aching in the face
  • Trouble closing or opening your mouth
  • A clicking or grating sound when moving your jaw

If you notice these symptoms, especially if they persist, you may have TMD. It’s a good idea to book an appointment at our office to get started with diagnosis and treatment. You shouldn’t have to live with daily jaw pain, and Dr. Todd is here to assist you.

Keep in mind, however, that you can have jaw clicking without any painful symptoms. When you don’t notice pain alongside popping noises, it may not be an acute issue. However, it’s still a good idea to have a dentist or doctor diagnose any issues you have with your jaw to ensure your overall health.

Effective Treatment Options

Dr. Todd and his team understand that the TMJ are some of the most complex joints in the body, and we have the equipment to treat them properly. TMD treatments may include medications, TMJ splints, mouth guards, or bite adjustments.

We want to work with you to provide you with conservative medical treatments and at-home relaxation techniques. We can discuss habit changes and TMJ massages to increase your comfort significantly.

Custom Oral Appliances

By simply wearing an oral appliance at night, you can reduce the stress on your joints. The muscles will relax and you will see your symptoms melt away. We often recommend oral appliances at first because they are so convenient and often bring great results. If mouthguards don’t work, we can then try other treatment options until you feel better.

If you are suffering from acute TMJ pain, you can wear the mouth guard we create for you throughout the day. Not only will this prevent pain as you go about work and other chores at home, but it will train your jaw to relax in a short period of time.
